My Current Skincare Routine

For me, 2019 will be the year of skincare!

This year, I would like to continue my commitment to the 10-Step Korean Skin Care Routine, which is my current skincare routine and it seriously feels like the Marine Corps of skincare routines!

My skin feels amazing since starting this skincare routine and I can tell a difference in my skin’s complexion when I go a couple days without this crazy 10-step routine.

I love Tatcha (that’s why you’ll notice a good amount are from this brand) and I think it works well with my skin (I have combination skin, hello oily forehead!) but I think the product/step that makes the biggest difference in my skin is sunscreen! I can DEFINITELY tell a difference between when I wear sunscreen and when I don’t.

I only imagined SPF as something you use when you don’t want to burn outside but we ALL need to redefine how we think of sunscreen because it helps prevent dark spots and signs of aging!! I’m telling all my friends to wear more sunscreen because it’s the easiest thing you can do to help prevent early signs of aging. I’m currently using Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Dry-Touch Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 for $12.99.

I picked up a random sunscreen at CVS and have been liking this one so far. I like that it’s dry-touch because it doesn’t feel greasy on my face or hands. I wear it every single day before work and my makeup looks fine over it (I don’t wear foundation tho).

For anyone not familiar with the 10-Step Korean Skincare Routine, here it is below:

  1. Oil Cleanser
  2. Water Based Cleanser
  3. Exfoliator
  4. Toner
  5. Essence
  6. Treatments
  7. Mask
  8. Eye Cream
  9. Moisturizer
  10. SPF

My previous skincare routine was relatively nonexistent. My college roommates HATED that I could wash my face in the shower and then put on Bath & Body Works lotion on my face and not have a single break out. Of course, times are changing and my face is now starting to show all those years of putting body lotion on my face.

Below, I will list the products I use, the purpose of the step/product and how to use that product.

1) Oil Cleanser:

Products I Use: Tatcha Pure One Step Camellia Oil Cleanser $48 or Clinique’s Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm $29.50 (both of mine are sample-sized).

Purpose: Oil cleansers break down oil-based debris such as makeup and sunscreen.

How to Use: Night. Gently massage onto dry skin, add water to lather, then rinse.

2) Water-Based Cleanser:

Products I Use: Tatcha The Deep Cleanse Exfoliating Cleanser $38

Purpose: Cleansing twice is recommended by aestheticians and dermatologists because it helps to thoroughly remove any impurities that can cause breakouts. Water-based cleansers remove water-based impurities such as dirt and sweat that the oil cleanser didn’t pick up.

How to Use: Morning & Night. Apply to damp face and massage in a circular motion, then rinse.

3) Exfoliator:

Products I Use: Tatcha The Rice Polish Foaming Enzyme Powder $68

Purpose: Exfoliators help clean pores and clean off dead skin cells for visibly brighter and smoother skin. It also will help your other skincare products absorb and work more efficiently.

How to Use: Night (This exfoliant is extremely gentle and can be used everyday for my skin, however, other exfoliators should be used at night 1-2 times a week).

Tatcha Directions for Rice Powder: Begin with wet hands and face, pour a half-teaspoon of powder into hands, rub hands together to create a creamy foam, gently massage on face for 15-seconds, then rinse.

4) Toner:

Products I Use: Thayer’s Witch Hazel Alcohol-Free Toner in Rose Petal $7

Purpose: Toners are the ultimate prep product! Toners remove any leftover residue from your cleansers while also repairing your skin’s natural barrier to help absorb the moisturizers that follow. Which basically means that toners are great at balancing moisture and pH levels in your face.

How to Use: Morning & Night. I use a cotton square (Shiseido Facial Cotton $12) to swipe the toner across my entire face.

5) Essence:

Products I Use: SK-II Facial Treatment Essence $179 (I received a sample-size and don’t know if this product is worth that hefty price-tag. I will definitely try out other brands before committing to an almost car payment on essence).

Purpose: Essences are meant to hydrate and it also aids in cell turnover. Essences are lightweight and packed with a concentrated blend of hydrating, anti-aging, and complexion-enhancing ingredients.

How to Use: Morning & Night. Pour a small amount into hands, then lightly pat into face and neck.

6) Treatments:

Products I Use: KORRES Wild Rose Vitamin C Active Brightening Oil $54 (I received a sample-size, like super small but, two drops and that’s all I need and it has lasted me almost 2 months!)

Purpose: This step is to directly target and treat your problem areas. Boosters, serums, and ampoules are packed with amazing ingredients that can target skin concerns such as acne, fine lines (my issue), and hyperpigmentation. Some ingredients to look out for that your skin will love are soybeans, tea tree, and vitamin c.

How to Use: Morning & Night. Gently tap into the skin, while focusing on your skin concern.

7) Sheet Masks:

Products I Use: Olehenriksen Cold Plunge Pore Mask $36, Philosophy Purity Made Simple Pore Extractor Mask $35 (my HOLY GRAIL mask), or the Biossance Squalane + Glycolic Renewal Facial $68 (I will go back-and-forth between all 3 masks but like I said my go-to mask is from philosophy).

Purpose: To infuse your skin with concentrated essence (if you used sheet masks) or to promote the ritual of relaxation (any-type of mask lol)

How to Use: Night. Use as directed. Most masks say to apply to clean skin, wait 10-20 minutes or until dry, then rinse.

8) Eye Cream:

Products I Use: Fresh Black Tea Forming and De-Puffing Eye Cream $68 (I received a sample-size. I’m almost done with the sample and I don’t see a big difference in my under eyes, I will try another eye cream because I have crazy dark circles). I have the Famacy Sleep Tight Firming Night Balm with Echinacea GreenEnvy $48 on backup, so fingers crossed on that one!

Purpose: Hydrates and prevents dark circles, puffiness, and crow’s feet.

How to Use: Morning & Night. I use my ring or pinkie finger to gently tap (Never rub! That was my rookie mistake) around the entire orbital bone, avoiding the water line.

9) Moisturizer:

Products I Use: Tatcha The Water Cream $68 (freaking ADORE this moisturizer!)

Purpose: Moisturizers can come in many forms (lotion, gel, cream, sleeping mask etc.) and their main purpose is to seal in moisture to plump skin and to smooth out fine lines.

How to Use: Morning & Night. Apply a small amount onto face and neck.

10) SPF:

Products I Use: Neutrogena Sheer Zinc Dry-Touch Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 $12.99.

Purpose: Sunscreen protects your skin from damaging UV rays. Also, sunscreen should be your last step so it can shield your skin without being diluted by additional products.

How to Use: Gently pat into face and neck, then apply any makeup you’d wish to put on once dry.

And that’s it! Major kudos to you if you made it through this whole list because like I said, this skincare routine is intense!!

I will be turning 26 this year and I want to do everything I can now to prevent signs of aging and so far, I’ve found that this skincare routine is the best way to do just that. I mean, come on, Korean people must have beautiful skin for a reason and I think it’s because of this skincare routine; they value the look and health of their skin.

I have been doing this skincare routine for a few months now and will continue to maintain the health and appearance of my skin’s complexion.

What does your skincare routine look like? Is it different from mine? Are there any products you have questions on? I have used these for a few months now and have a good grasp on the products I’ve used and if I’ll repurchase or not.

Let’s make 2019 the year of skincare!! 🙂
